19057 - Car armrest assembly and pressing station

An assembly station with FESTO servo drives for precise pressing and measuring of car armrest components. Each part is checked with a KEYENCE QR code scanner, and all data collected during the process are archived and transferred to the TRACEABILITY system.

Intended use of the machine

The machine consists of two stations. A car armrest prepared at the pre-assembly station is placed in the pressing station, where the “Starclock” elements are pressed onto the pin while the arm is lifted until the required force is reached.

Description of operation

Pre-assembly station:

  • placing the armrest base in the fixture;
  • automatic clamping of the part and reading of the QR code;
  • assembly of all required components by the operator from feeders equipped with pick-to-light sensors;
  • automatic release of the part after assembly is completed;
  • removal of the part from the fixture.

Pressing station:

  • placing the pre-assembled part in the fixture;
  • starting the automatic cycle;
  • automatic clamping of the part;
  • pressing with simultaneous measurement of the lifting force;
  • stopping the pressing process once the set lifting force is reached;
  • return of the machine to the home position;
  • automatic release of the part;
  • removal of the finished part from the machine.

Machine design

PRESSING MODULES

Two independent servo presses control the pressing process based on the current position and force.

LIFTING MODULE

A lifting arm driven by a stepper motor, with a strain gauge sensor, monitors the lifting force of the armrest during pressing.

OPERATOR PANEL

Controls and a 9-inch display allow selection of the reference, process monitoring and control of individual machine movements. The operator has full freedom in selecting the program and operating parameters: joining stages, forces, speeds, relaxation times etc. can be set from the HMI.

QR CODE SCANNER

Every assembled armrest carries a QR code; product data are archived on an ongoing basis and sent to the TRACEABILITY system.

FRAME

The welded steel frame accommodates all modules as well as the electrical and pneumatic equipment. The working area consists of the part fixture, the lifting module and two independent plates carrying the pressing modules.

  • elimination of human errors and a simpler pre-assembly process – pick-to-light sensors keep the assembly sequence correct;
  • testing of the armrest lifting function – an automatic swivel arm with a force sensor checks the mechanism;
  • verification of correct pressing – measurement based on the press curve detects material defects or assembly errors (e.g. missing washers);
  • data analysis thanks to archiving in the machine memory and transfer to the TRACEABILITY system.
