Cable untwisting and straightening machine

A machine for untwisting and straightening pairs of twisted electrical wires. Used when fitting connectors in wiring harnesses, it greatly simplifies mounting pins and plugs on the wires.

Purpose of the machine

The machine untwists and straightens the ends of twisted-pair electrical cables with a cross-section from 0.35 mm² to 6 mm². It prepares the wires for crimping pins and fitting connectors in wiring harnesses.

Principle of operation

Untwisting: the operator places the wire in the driver and holds it while the driver untwists the twisted conductors.

Straightening: the movable jaws clamp the wire ends and flatten them.

The control system allows operation in three modes:

  • Mode I – untwisting: only the driver drive runs. Pressing the foot pedal does not start any other drives.
  • Mode II – alternating operation: the driver drive starts. Once the wire end is untwisted, the operator starts the straightening module.
  • Mode III – straightening: the driver is switched off, and the jaws move back and forth continuously and stay apart. After placing the wire between the jaws, the operator presses the foot pedal and the upper jaw moves toward the lower one. The straightening time is adjustable.

Inside of the cable untwisting and straightening machine: untwisting unit, straightening jaws and pneumatic cylinder

Machine design

  • Untwisting unit: worm gearbox with motor, fitted with a driver for untwisting wires.
  • Straightening unit: a gear motor drives the jaws back and forth via a slider; clamping force is provided by a pneumatic cylinder.
  • Pneumatic system: compressed-air preparation unit and clamping cylinder.
  • Control: selection of operating mode and untwisting direction, adjustable straightening time, foot pedal operation.
  • Structure: powder-coated steel enclosure.

Safety

The driver and jaws are located inside an enclosure with a door fitted with a safety interlock. The machine has a main switch, an emergency stop button and a window for viewing the working area.

Benefits

  • untwisting and straightening wires with a cross-section of 0.35 mm² to 6 mm²,
  • shorter operation time,
  • easier fitting of plugs on straightened wires.
